The Jersey Surf, along with 199 other non profit organizations from throughout the United States including nine other drum corps, received confirmation this morning of their success in an online charitable giving drive conducted by Chase Bank through the popular Facebook social networking platform. Incorporating public voting to determine the beneficiaries of grant money totaling $5 million, the Jersey Surf finished the voting with 1807 votes, ranking it 78th in the voting overall and resulting in the awarding of a $20,000 unrestricted grant to the organization from the Chase Community Giving Program.
"It's a tremendous boost for our program, and a great way for us to celebrate our 20th Anniversary – with a $20,000 gift," said Executive Director Bob Jacobs. "We are extremely grateful to our corps members, volunteers, staff, alumni, board members and friends who supported us in this effort, and for all of those who have supported our program and shared in our vision for the past twenty years. We hope to use this generous grant to help us fuel our future successes."
Earlier this year, Chase provided over 500,000 local organizations with a national platform from which to promote their missions, attract new supporters and gain visibility with more than 2 million Chase Community Giving fans on Facebook. At the end of the program, Chase awarded $5 million to charities all over the country, including a grand prize donation of $1 million to Invisible Children, to help children in Uganda. Their summer campaign, which ended yesterday, provided a top prize of $250,000, four additional prizes of $100,000 each, and 195 grants of $20,000.
Other DCI corps benefiting from the campaign included the Madison Scouts, Blue Stars, Boston Crusaders, Bluecoats, Troopers, Pacific Crest and Spirit of Atlanta. All-age groups Alliance and Music City Legend also received $20,000 gifts.
