Hunger impacts millions of men, women and children in America and throughout the world. To help raise awareness of this pervasive situation, percussionists of the Jersey Surf participated in the "Hunger Beat Down" on Saturday, January 14. This event saw thousands of drummers across the world simultaneously playing the Civil War-era piece, "Three Camps". Just as drums were used to rally troops in the Civil War, it was the hope of the organizers that their message of hunger awareness would be communicated through the power of percussive expression.
After the Surf drummers learned and performed "Three Camps", percussion education director Matt Savage spoke to the assembled group about the plight of the hungry. Savage initiated a discussion on the subject during which members reported their individual experiences. Second year Surf member Raj Bajwa was inspired by his Eagle Scout project to help those less fortunate than himself. He volunteers with a food bank in his community, preparing and delivering food to those in need. Raj shared with the group, "It's a good feeling helping those who have less than me." Savage than presented a challenge to the drummers in attendance - to research local food banks, identify a need in their community and donate $5 in goods to help those in need – a small gesture which goes a long way to help others by Sharing the Love.
