Overview
The Jersey Surf is a competitive performing arts and music education organization which participates in the Drum Corps International Summer Music Games tour. It is an independent, self-sponsored, non-profit corporation which is recognized nationally for excellence in youth programming. The corps has been a recent top contender in DCI's Open Class division with a silver place finish in 2007 and a bronze third at the World Championships in Bloomington, IN in 2008. The corps was also the 2003, 2004 and 2005 recipient of the prestigious "Spirit of Disney"award for design creativity, innovation and performance excellence.
In general, Jersey Surf membership is awarded to individuals who share our values and who display a willingness to work hard to achieve our mutual goals. A positive attitude is more important to us than "just" talent. Corps members range in age from 14 through 22. The average member is 17.5 years old.
Nearly all of our instructional staff members are music education professionals. All of our activities are chaperoned and supervised by adults who have helped to create the program.
Most of the corps' performances take place in the Eastern US, including NJ, PA, DE, MD, NC, TN, NY, CT, MA, and NH. The corps will travel to the 2010 DCI Summer Music Games World Championships, which will be held in Indianapolis, IN in August. The corps will travel several thousand miles this season, offering their members the the opportunity to perform, the ability to lead and the desire to excel.
Commitment
The Surf rehearses one weekend a month from November through April, increasing to every weekend during May and June. The competitive season spans every weekend in July and the first two weeks of August. There is a weeklong camp during the first week of July and a 2-week tour in August. Members are expected to make every effort to be present at every corps function.
Our program has been established to supplement the music education experience our members receive in high school and college, not to replace it. It is important, however that Jersey Surf members fully understand the commitment they are making to our organization in light of other obligations they may already have. Communication in this area is the key to your success.
There is a financial commitment as well, but specific fees will vary by section. Annual fees average approximately $2000, including a non-refundable registration fee. Payments are due according to a monthly schedule, and are offset through participation in a number of fund raising and member sponsorship programs.
